18 months ago Channel 4 marooned 6 disabled people on a remote Scottish isle for six months with only bare sustenance, to see how they would survive. Cameras followed their every move both on the island and at home during the six months leading up to their abandonment.
Or so it seems. Cast Offs is a sharp satire on reality tv, a fake documentary charting the trials and tribulations, loves and losses of six people with various disabilities apparently left to fend for themselves in the wilderness. Gabby is deaf, Tim blind. After a nasty car accident Dan, a budding athlete was consigned to a wheelchair, Carrie is a dwarf, Will thalidomide affected and April has cherubism, a rare genetic disorder that causes prominence in the lower portion in the face. Applying a documentary format, ‘Cast Offs’ questions the boundaries of reality tv and draws you into the lives of 6 kinetic people and the various ordeals they are forced to confront.
