There was a time when people had to use their imaginations as to what antics went on backstage after a fashion show or gig etc. Celebrities kept their 'good face' for their fans and remained someone to idolise or look up to before they all went for a well earned booze up in private.
Spoiling the mystery these days are phones and Blackberries welded to every celebs hand, spoon feeding us every sight they see and in some cases spoiling any remaining dignity they have via Twitter, so consider this - Roxanne Lowit was the ONLY photographer in the late 1970s, until relatively recently, to attend the exclusive post fashion show parties. Loved by the A listers she was smuggled in by the likes of Jerry Hall and took fantastic and intimate photographs of those she rubbed shoulders with. Her photography offered a unique insight into the hallowed unseen worlds inhabited only by the cream of the crop.
An exhibition dedicated to the Grand Dame of celebrity and backstage photography is now on entitled 'Legendary Privicy' at the at the Kaune, Sudendorf Gallery in Cologne, Germany, providing Joe Bloggs the chance to see the rare scenes no one else did in New York from 1979 to 1999. The exhibition runs until Sept 3rd.
