The Day I went to see Avenue Q....
Now I'm an avid musical fan, I was bought up on Les Miserables, Miss Saigon and the infamous Phantom of the Opera so for me, it feels completely normal to watch complete strangers burst into song at regular intervals, but Puppets/Puppeteers.....that was quite a new experience.
But this was an ADULT musical, with songs like 'Everyones a little bit racist sometimes' and 'Its ok if you're gay'. The songs were a juxtaposition of hysterical and cringe-worthy, and although it had the cheese of 'AMERICA' the storyline was funny and made quite apt social comments on our modern society.
At first, you only seem to watch the puppeteers but as the scenes go along the attention shift changes to the puppets and their interaction with the other character...
Favourite Character:
The bad idea bears! These sweet cuddly bears always turned up with naughty ideas that distracted you from being sensible - like getting you drunk on Absynth the night before an important meeting - or persuading you to spend all your rent money on Beer - think we all have one of these on our shoulders quietly waiting to tempt you with bad ideas....
Overall, it had me in a stitches, well worth the money and quite a refreshing take on the traditional musical genre.
