Body (building) beautiful?: Incredible portraits of female body builders by Martin Schoeller
‘Female Bodybuilders’ (by a German photographer Martin Schoeller) a recent good find on a friend’s bookshelf, is one of the most fascinating books of portraits I have seen in a long time. Whilst studying every photograph intensely, thoughts were coming and going rapidly but one remained still throughout: the individual’s idea of the ideal beauty. These women sculpted and pushed their bodies to their very limits and there are so few traces of femininity left on them (apart from obvious boob jobs) that they could well be men. Their heads thought seem like they don’t belong to their sculpted masculine bodies with their hair done and faces caked in make up. It is a fascinating combination of masculinity and femininity and intensely thought provoking body of work by Schoeller.
