When I was growing up I had very little desire to travel around Australia. After living in London for 4 years that was all I wanted to do when I got back.
My girlfriend, two mates and myself decided to rent a van and drive across the top of the country from Cairns to Darwin.
Leading up to the trip everyone I mentioned it to in Sydney told us we were stupid. It was the wet season, it was going to rain for the whole trip and the roads would be treacherous.
On the North East coast, our starting point, it was the box jellyfish season. Killer jellyfish, some as small as a fingernail, swarming the entire coastline.
Every watering hole across the top end would also be riddled with crocs, free to move as they please among the swollen rivers.
Everyone had a story to tell, a friend of a friend being chased 60km by some racist rednecks, 'Haven't you seen Wolf Creek?'
These warnings only made me more excited and we decided to extend our trip and leave Sydney as soon as possible.
Things couldn't have turned out better, we got hooked up the whole way across the country. We were celebrities, everyone we met wanted to take us somewhere or give us something. I have never experienced anything quite like it.
These photos were taken in various places on a Nikon F3 and an excellent reusable underwater camera I bought for $25.
